Optimising Remote Team Performance: Four Key Guidelines

Optimising Remote Team Performance: Four Key Guidelines

Optimising Remote Team Performance: Four Key Guidelines

Ensuring the Right Technology

To optimise remote team performance, it’s crucial to provide your team with the necessary technology for work, communication, and collaboration. Utilise cloud-based tools such as Microsoft Teams, Skype, Facetime, Zapier, Google Drive, Slack, Basecamp, and WeTransfer to facilitate seamless operations. Make sure each team member has access to the essential equipment and has a well-organised home workspace that prioritises health and safety.

Providing Clear Guidance

Set explicit expectations for both individual and team performance, including goals, deadlines, and deliverables. Aim for 'Goldilocks' goals that are not too easy but not too challenging, keeping team members engaged and motivated. Utilise SMART goals—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound—to provide clear targets. Communicate the team's overarching purpose to build a sense of cohesion and community. Also, establish norms for engagement, including working hours, communication standards, and procedures for addressing issues.

Adopting Flexibility and Building Trust

Acknowledge that team members respond differently to management styles and tailor your approach to meet individual needs. For those who value structure, discuss the best ways to organise their workday. Trust your team by giving them autonomy over their work, setting clear goals, and allowing them to manage their tasks independently. Be flexible to accommodate personal circumstances, helping to maintain motivation and productivity.

Maintaining Connection

To offset the absence of in-person interactions, incorporate informal elements into virtual meetings. Allocate time for sharing personal updates, discussing challenges, and exchanging tips for managing distractions. Set up remote working buddies or peer coaching systems to provide support for all team members. Regular one-on-one check-ins are vital to maintaining individual connections. Show appreciation with specific thank-yous, rewards, or care packages to boost morale. Organise regular virtual social events, such as after-work gatherings, coffee chats, or themed activities, to strengthen team bonds. Use remote work as an opportunity to deepen team connections and explore new ways of collaborating.
