Understanding Wellbeing: Beyond Physical Health in the Workplace

Understanding Wellbeing: Beyond Physical Health in the Workplace

Understanding Wellbeing: Beyond Physical Health

Wellbeing is a comprehensive concept that includes comfort, health, and happiness. Given that a substantial portion of life is spent at work, focusing on workplace wellbeing is essential. In the context of the ongoing health crisis, emphasising employee wellbeing has become more critical than ever.

Dual Focus: Physical and Mental Wellbeing

Both physical and mental health are crucial aspects of overall wellbeing, yet mental health often receives less attention. The stigma surrounding mental health can result in fewer discussions compared to physical health issues, with employees being significantly more likely to talk about their physical health. Studies show that around 60% of employees experience work-related mental health challenges.

Maintaining Employee Wellbeing: Practical Steps

Open Communication and Listening: Transparent communication from management can help reduce the impact of mental health issues. Creating an environment where open dialogue is encouraged supports employees in discussing their feelings. Establishing mental health resources, such as those available through our Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), fosters a supportive culture and provides crucial assessments, counselling, and follow-up services.

Regular Connection and Check-Ins: With remote work becoming more prevalent, regular check-ins and virtual meetings are essential to prevent isolation. Scheduling daily touchpoints, team meetings, and informal virtual interactions helps maintain team morale and cohesion, ensuring a sense of normalcy.

Creating a Comfortable Environment: In the office, allocate spaces for collaborative work and discussions. Promote physical wellness by offering healthy snacks, gym discounts, and on-site activities like yoga. For remote teams, encourage virtual collaboration through shared platforms and keep employees engaged with newsletters that offer tips on managing mental and physical health. Transitioning training and development online can also provide variety and set new goals for employees, helping to break the monotony.

Our Employee Assistance Programme helps businesses in incorporating these strategies and further enhances overall employee wellbeing, contributing to a healthier and more productive work environment.
